Today, to be only concerned with oneself is to complacently slips into the isolation of inertness. With recent beheadings and fearful retaliation, one is faced with a conundrum perhaps without solution, save… (Image-delta.edu)

Poem Artwork
If Only
by Odin Roark

Is breathing involuntary,
Even for those who spend their lives suffocated
By an unwillingness to breathe?

How timid the blade's thrust.

Cautious from where the storm's grip began,
Pondering whether lightning needs thunder,
Passion requires boredom's consent,
Feeling deserves armor plate defense.

Newborns sense such confusion,
This exercising of one's conditional breath,
Sensing identity is shackled,
Subject to big people’s programmed understanding,
Life’s open-ended existence made somehow undecipherable.

Yet…

This naiveté knows,
Feels,
Instinctively anticipates,
Growing up might be unviable,
After all…
Acquiescence takes over,
Accepting imprisoned adulthood as being without joy.

Better to be kept tethered like a kite,
Soaring controlled,
Led,
Fed,
Kept in air pockets of mediocrity,
Risking little loss,
Simple gain,
No disappointment.

Still…

There are those beings
Refusing to believe,
Entrapment is all there is.

These are the fortunate,
Believing there is light behind the clouds,
The yet discovered searing heat of the unknown,
Urging the eruptive awakening of pure rain,
To make moist warmth beneath our limbs
As we finally embrace our earth.

Reflection follows,
A honing of the unanswerable
Epiphanous moments slice upward,
Revealing directions to unfamiliar sunrises.

Eventually,
An exonerated deep breath
Fully releases our captivity,
A permission granted by self,
Where one’s feathery blade of courage embraces,
Needing never to cut,
Having finally penetrated the evasive stillness
Known as peace.

If Only.

Your wishful, wistful incantations for the people on this planet soar in your poetic offerings. The realm of art/poetry, however, continues to provide only a slippery surface on which to stand. Have you considered writing political speeches or sermons? People seem to need step by step instructions to get from point a to point b. M.True

There is something very true about naïveté , if we could only hold on to a little of that and not be swallowed by the world.

Tragedies abound far away and close to home, it isn't a safe world, even if you live in a supposedly secure building, I found that out, not by the hard way, but by just observing. Good write here.

Although there were references to the lead line, I was left with some confusion.

As far as the situation is concerned. You seem to be describing how we leave childhood behind, and the consequences if we don't… If we just drift and do nothing to improve our lives or others.

While movies and video games depict this kind of violence almost continually, to the point of becoming numb to it, I am quite surprised at the reaction to the deranged behavior of a cult with megalomaniac tendencies very similar to the Nazis. Perhaps it would be better just to ignore their demonstrations and secretly undermine them rather than giving them far more publicity than they deserve for the small atrocities they are committing in public instead of the much larger atrocities (not filmed or displayed in public) going on all around us with no one speaking out.

These are the fortunate,
Believing there is light behind the clouds,

These are the fortunate, indeed, especially these sad days.
