Introspective Road
by Odin Roark
Summer…
That undulating time of year,
heat recalling endless time spent for travel,
where there is a want for nothing,
save the crunch of boot or tire atop a remembered frozen cover,
swirling through mountain valley and gorge
to the road waiting,
accepting any and all the unknowns.
How lonely this passage in winter,
anticipating a storm cloud's shroud,
a cover oh so insulated,
preparing the morning's daybreak,
a pine bough's relent,
sending crystalline dust afloat,
refracting time's patience and love.
Come spring…
Sunlight's warmth arouses shivering memories,
erosion beckons fresh spiderweb memoirs for tomorrow,
where exposure’s infirm,
transient, and windblown identity
determines to remain whole.
Such are nature’s layers of the one,
a mantled pavement,
time’s rocking chair solace
of once shared inviolate thunder,
now giving tempest its rest.
And so…
Please stay…
Park your summer’s rush of urgency,
float remembrances beside me,
and tread lightly your durations upon my shoulders,
recall with me last year’s tapestry of woven climates,
enjoin my patience for the coming season,
but a few sunrises away.
I burned up many a country road in Wisconsin and West Virginia, but the Oregon country roads are truly picturesque, regardless of season.
