VR's Cutting Edge

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

With escapism the order of the day, advanced Virtual Reality headsets poised for release, and programming hype wetting many vicarious appetites, some might argue that progress is regressing. (Image by arip)

VR’s Cutting Edge
by Odin Roark

Hence without parent of flesh and bone,
the digital womb of zeros and ones
spews forth the immersion of surroundness,
where engorged pixels of animated fiction,
rise with decibel accompaniment,
impregnating sub-organic life beneath keyboard and mouse,
for another binge of wanton Epicurean chaos.

Rising above the mud of Reality entertainment,
techno-angelic innovation creates a new existential levitation,
nurturing our escape from the primordial ooze of Network pleas,
our digitized limbs stampeding to abandon
our so-yesterday-touchy-feely-drive-by lives,
rushing to become lost in an isolation of choice,
an endless drift into the next tomorrow,
to drown in the future Genesis of fin, feet and wing,
becoming the new half-species of digi-lab success,
where to touch another human will all but disappear
in the sterile maze of progress,
the endless rushing about,
clamoring for an even sharper cutting-edge…

I don't find it laughable at all. Just an extension of video games and holography, tricking the brain into someone else's preconceived idea of reality. Just like we like to get into a novel and play the characters in our mind while reading, virtual-reality will allow us to put on the costume and play to the hilt. It certainly is remarkable what 1s and 0s in combination can do. Almost mind-boggling.

I was thinking about it this morning. How my doctoral advisor asked me to change the title of my monogram from Artificial Intelligence to Machine Intelligence, telling me that "there is nothing artificial about intelligence." To me, the test is very simple. I don't think that a human written program of 1s and 0s, will ever be able to have a unique "thought."

Virtual reality is just another stage in our evolution into something we might now call, "super human."

Odd that this piece and Edward Phillips' Sensatins should appear back to back in my mail. You two might have been hooked together in some clairvoyant channeling project. Extraordinary.

I'm laughing my ass off at your rapier wit in lacing together the longest and funniest list of Odinisms ever assembled.
