Poem Artwork
One Wonders
by Odin Roark

Why is it…

So many old friends become mute?
So few acquaintances opt for friendship?
So little comes of in-person exchange?
So much is derived from strangers on the net?
Might it be that skepticism has become
a trustful friend to longevity?

Why is it…

Such a new and vibrant life can be wrought during the latter years,
if only one ignores the fear conditioning of the many previous years?

And so…

One wonders…

Why is it such joy can be discovered
when the old programmed attachments are cut loose?

For some of us,
many sunrises still await those who accept
the “It’s not over ‘til it’s over” maxim.

???

Perhaps there are no answers,
just more wonderful and surprising questions,
given our hard-wired tenacity for survival.

I believe that to be true, and Merry Christmas to you

Perhaps it is those years of "youth" - the forerunner of wisdom - with eyes of inquisitive nature preventing us from seeing what has always been there. Do we have to survive our mistakes in order to gain the additive knowledge we seem to possess in our silver years? Could it be we move too swiftly as young people and miss the many opportunities presented by those who have attained that age of knowledge? I know that I am now in those "latter years" and still have many bruises on my shins from my journey If I had opened my ears as well as my eyes, perhaps the journey would have been less painful.
The one vital ingredient for a more grounded and full life is to never put technology before people or friends.
Thanks,
Chris

You gave me a lot to think about in this poem. So many seem programmed in life and unable to break free. Some when they retire from work, the only thing they ever did; they die quickly. But some of us with inquisitive minds, are not settled in our ways but are always looking for new adventures and to learn more and interact with others. Hence, like you suggested, I have found that some Internet connections are much more rich than long time friendships that are wasting away for one reason or another--mostly distance.

Some old connections can be troublesome. Especially the ones who don't interact civilly or honorably. Wanting something they're incapable of giving can be quite draining, too. Even some family connections can become deleterious. Sad. A lot of those 'old programmed attachments' (you mention) can end up becoming impediments to a keen and curious mind seeking originality. Perhaps you're right. There are no answers. But I don't think we should ever stop searching for them. Nor should we ever give up entirely on others in the quest. Enjoyed this. Peace to you...
