That Cherry-On-Top

Some things seem imponderable…until we choose to consider. How sad those who opt to remain anesthetized with ignorance. (Image by Zazzle)

Poem Artwork
That Cherry-On-Top
by Odin Roark

Human-kind asks much of forever,
while the adult-child wonders.

Is there a beyond the cherry-on-top,
or only the now of a celebration?

For just as the party-minded don impatience,
while the easily-pleasured seek to relax,
thinking minds vacillate between
being one who accepts,
or one who knows not waiting?

Inevitably…

Divorce,
be it domestic, business, or friendship,
asks why spend so much time growing as one,
only to painfully separate
even as society’s brand of success,
pushes its “all as one” deceptive smile,
avoiding the question: “where might joy be real?”

Above it all,
or below it all
poets and philosophers ponder
the moral choices leading to joy,
always cognizant of the high road’s challenge,
where simple existence knows
only to honor the cherry stem
no less than the melting snows,
especially the grey slush beside
life’s much-traveled road.

The “cherry-on-top’ questions remain invigorating,
albeit frustrating,
for the sweetness of answers
continues its forever complicated resolve,
always begging the next bitter question.

Interesting perspective as to what really matters. I've found that as I age and have become free from those climbs to the top, I treat myself to little "cherries" that I ignored all those years. I find that quite rewarding and seek no more.

Real Joy can only be found Within, not On Top.

Sometimes we just pour on the whipped topping to hide any of the imperfections in the "Sundae " of life we have created.
Can't help it, I owned a soft serve yogurt franchise for years, ha!

Bitter answers, sweet questions, the search goes on. Some people ask and try to answer, such as you have done in this poem. Others don't bother and are happy, such that it is, with the status quo. Some interesting food for thought in this intriguing poem, a kind of cherry in its own right (not just on top).

John
