Urgency's Tyranny

With so many definitions of the “fast lane,” one is reduced to considering the basics. (Image from Aruba’s Fontein Cave art)

Urgency’s Tyranny
by Odin Roark

Gotta go.

Gotta move.

Gotta get there first.

Human folly
fast at work.

While…

Lesser creatures
technologically untainted.
go about living,
unaware of this inordinate competition
of narcissistic compulsion.

Even as…

History knows how relaxed the spider waits.

How soundlessly steadfast the ant’s excursion.

How undeterred the tenacious cockroach.

And…

Unlike the butterfly,
or the first flowering plants,
man knows well how to take without giving,
incorporate running as stratagem,
roll with domesticated roulette,
and ego-procreation unabated.

We deliriously continue…

This human travesty of reckless behavior,
this sidestepping of the obvious,
where oxygenated patches of ancestral endurance,
Central Park oases,
withering Amazon jungles,
melting icecaps,
ocean’s Dead Zones,
drift neglected through our conscience.

Such is urgency’s tyranny,
the blinding brass ring quest,
that obviates the responsibility
of who and what we are.

So knows the smallest survivors of life,
inscribed in cave-wall history,
occasionally moving in and out of
our carefree existence.

All the while…

Nature’s wiser permanence that has learned well,
and will always continue to hone survivor skills,
continues to outlive our species.

You captured so well the need for "Doing" of mankind...as compared to just "Being." Thank you!

At first I thought that you were writing about our propensity to try to one up our fellow competitors, something that many mammals do in nature, particularly at mating time. But then, I realized that you are writing about our headlong rush to the end of our existence as we race away from the reality of a land-based lifestyle to one of massive exploitation. Cool.

I have always enjoyed driving in the fast lane, not because I wanted to get there before someone else--that was for races--but to enjoy the sheer, pure thrill of velocity. I know it is wrong by consuming so much, but I'm addicted to speed, and that's the problem.

Well done! from this brave piece I get to know the difference between tsunami and a storm in a teacup, and that the latter can definitely have the smashed aftermath of the former. . . actually, it has already had. Cheers, alex

A universal theme, well stated. Love the message you present from nature, how true. AND love the title, again true, there is a tyranny to urgency that is unmistakable.
