Anonymity's Joy

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Why must the spoils of fame's fortune so often trump consciousness? What kind of person wishes name notoriety (and all the obligations of fame) over acknowledgment of his or her work as an influence, a contribution to making life more meaningful: Perhaps a chronic narcissist, but not an artist whose work is his or her existence. When all is said and done, names are forgotten, but the influence by and of an artist's work lives on. Thus, the quest for anonymity's signature has much to offer for posterity. (Image by moonglaze)

Poem Artwork
Anonymity’s Joy
by Odin Roark

Walking through a surreal forest
where abundance not yet pruned of its integrity,
blooms a oneness pondering the sunlight
as it continues its respectful hide and seek,
the mind’s play with shade and light.

Even as “out there” encroachment drifts ever closer,
leaving behind that which once grew from roots,
long nourished by natures faithful bright and dark presence,
notoriety opts to become man's produce
a questionable harvest of covetous want.

Unfortunately…

Few know the dichotomy of society’s labels,
where fame and anonymity start as mere seedlings
sprouting from life’s innocent Petri dish
chancing absorption into polluted flesh of greed
or the ever-sharing breath of munificence.

What price must be paid
for convoluted lust of want,
once rendered by life's moisture,
mind's growth now worshiped as mist
from ambition’s narcissistic fog?

Will our children always strain
to see life’s vapid forest for the trees,
as its rapidly disappearing shade
makes inhospitable and barren the now seared,
once organic, rich, carpet of opportunity and self realization?

And what of these aspirant landfills,
where discarded dreams,
once of passion,
once of thought,
once of purpose,
now languor,
as “pushed” crumpled envelopes
waste and human-rodent invested greed.

Will our youth too be harrowed under
by the soul mover’s blade,
left to reach up through dusty residue
for that which was denied their work as well,
basic acknowledgment to encourage better effort,
worthy of respect?

Beware of fame and fortune’s price,
for labels of success care little of sunrise or sunset,
only the protective armor of conceit
that risks blackening the soul’s ether
into dark clouds to suffocate the light.

Wisdom knows constructive creation
is all that matters.

To remember what,
not who,
is the Nirvana of the mind…
and the heart, if open.

Lest we forget…

Namelessness never stoops to conquer,
only its work to elevate others to the level
of universal identity…
anonymity’s joy personified.

I seem to sense why you are writing this. The voting public seems to be enamored by personality rather than substance. That's why they elected Eisenhower and later, Ronald Reagan to run our country without a clue.

And, your prosetry reveals your disdain for greed and fashion to dictate conspicuous consumption and discarding that seems to inhabit our lifestyles rather than a concern for our nest. The Doty landfill rests within three blocks of my home. After consuming vast quantities of demolished houses and business over the years, including many toxic and dangerous substances like lead and asbestos buried as deep as 80 feet below the surface, the landfill was abandoned, leaving only the occasional fires deep in the earth spewing out toxic fumes in nearby neighborhoods (thankfully, not mine).

Shortly after its closing a golf course was opened there. But the neighborhood changed demographics and the hard-working people that moved in had no time for golf and the course failed like many other golf courses in this hard-working city. Yesterday, when I drove by, I saw that there were still piles of broken concrete jutting up from the piles of debris that created rolling hills 20 to 40 feet above the surrounding land, now primarily the home of rats and other critters… Finally, a place for wildlife to once again roam and multiply only to be exterminated by neighboring community hired exterminators.

I heard they may be making it into a park.

Ron

PS. Your anonymity seems to be working for you.

everything exists due to its name, without name nothing is able to survive; in the sense, anonymity is a fiction. . . or a fiction's fiction, which is the pretence of mind. This is the mind's methodology of being protected from blowing up in the tough conditions of destructive for humanity reality; hence the surreal forest which precedes the word 'unfortunately' above. In fact, it means 'fortunately,' despite all the play of mind within the narrow frame of innocent Petri dish -- the cradle of a large-scale or even universal DNA. . . now, this piece of name coinage comes to be in black-and-white to me ;)) Thanks lots for sharing. Cheers, alex

This poem is the quintessential Odin Roark, always a premise, a dilemma, an issue of the heart or mind, artfully crafted phrases that illuminate, each flowing onward to the next in measured steps, arriving ultimately in a focused confluence that brings relief, clarity, and wisdom without dogma. rancor or guilt. Anonymous? perhaps, but now I would know the author almost every time.

Some powerful phraseology here from beginning to end. "A questionable harvest of coveteous want" indeed. The idea of the poem a noble one and the message clear. Very well executed (forgive the pun). John
