Poem Artwork
Nowhere the Slipstream
by Odin Roark

In the beginning…

Free movement abounds,
unaware the dangers ahead.

Two lanes.
Seven lanes.
Life choices always beckoning.
Follow the impulse.
Everyone says that’s what it's all about.

First time…

A grade school playground.
Aggression dominates.
Calm takes willpower to stay on the side lines.
Fomenting followers bluster, “Failure! Wuss!

Steer to the "follow" lane.
Surge to the power's fast lane.
Let the pull take you as the bully in front,
breaks your resistance, ambition,
unstoppable.

Free rides.
No risk.
Others fend your cleverness.

School yards.
I-Hop revisits.
GPA on top.
Graduation.
Freedom.
Pedal to the metal.

"The World is a Vampire"
you know not.

Not yet.

The interview.
The job.
The suction again.
The fast lane your companion.
The exit ramp your option.

Quintessential speed.

Follow the leader.
Rise to the top.
Become the power.
Meet the future spouse.

Ah…

The speed.
That pull’s still there
The free ride's still free.

The glory.
The history.
The babies.
The promotions.
The divorces.
The...

The...

The return.
The dirt roads.
The two wheeled bike.
The ruts.
The flats.
The...

The...

Cursed slipstream is nowhere.

Nirvana.

As most ocean swimmers know, the rip tide is a deadly thing. Wanting to believe we have power over our environment is often a human frailty. Wanting to believe we have control over our life, similarly so. More often than not, as you so equisitly note, we are being taken for a ride. It is so much easier to go with the flow. The queation becomes, are we "less than" if we just stand on the beach and watch the waves roll in?

"Calm takes willpower to stay on the side lines." Relate to this. Tasting power for a season is a rush. It blows by, messes up your hair, and then it's gone. Being a millionaire has its merits as well. But the real substance of life is something different entirely. I won't elaborate. It's a blessing that we can write, purge, create, be different, and disagree, and in the process find a few empathetic souls that can relate. Each line in this is a snapshot of one individuals reality. Not depressing to me either, this. It's real. Your life experience (good and bad) has made you fully unique. You have a lot going for you. Enjoyed.
Peace to you...

Knowing a bit of your history helps me understand where this poem that reveals a lot of your life in short bursts is going.

While it is quite clear at the end that you have returned to a quieter, much less stressful life, I think you're alluding to, with the metaphor of a flat tire, that as we age, our health can throw us a foul ball once in a while just when we think we have reached equilibrium.

on the contrary, no depression at all. If you know the final result, what sort of overstress can bother you?! ;)) A normal human being's history just in a minute of reading thru. Cheers, alex

A snapshop ride down the eventual road of life. A bit depressing, this. John
