Poem Artwork
Park Bench Hotel
by Odin Roark

Staring up from my park bench,
Spartan threadbare blanket adequate,
you swirl about fading light’s warmth
and I envy,
oh, how I envy.

At midnight,
like other nights,
lamp power shuts off,
you flutter to my chest.

My eyes follow as you adjust
our night-moth visitation,
if only to shiver
beneath my cupped hand.

Our hearts pulsate together,
our insignificance
still a sign of greatness,
our lives triumphant
against a world’s cruelty.

No blind chance this,
me of tears
like Pagliacci.
You of powdered face
like a street mime.

Sleeping clowns we,
welcoming another night’s
circus of dreams.

Pagliacci's opera introduced verismo (realism) to Italian opera and brought him immediate acclaim, which is so much contrasted here with the image of moth, meaning the famously known Zhuang-zi's dream of a butterfly. Upon awaking, he did not know whether it had formerly been him dreaming that he was a butterfly, or it was now a butterfly dreaming that it was the master. But between him and a butterfly there must be a difference. This is a case of what is termed the transformation of things or the 'circus of dreams.' A great writing. Cheers, alex

Eloquent, touching and seemingly true, at least the "circus of dreams" part. John

Ahhh . . . And the "circus of dreams" is an ongoing experience within the hearts and souls of the street people. I relate.
