Soundless Words

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

For some of us, childhood beginnings elude our memory as we attempt to keep our balance in the rush to progress. To pause and reflect seems priceless at times. If we’re lucky, unvoiced remembrances can even find a voice in later age. (Image by Pinterest).

Soundless Words
by Odin Roark

Upright center

Mother peels potatoes
before windows gray of gray,
between outside fences bent
over winter’s sequined blight.

Skitter skitter,
snow creatures prance lacework
upon the snows,
weaving crystal tapestry
for boredom’s mind-time fun.

Spread before

Plates once whole,
chipped ancestry now,
wait patiently to serve
mother’s sunshine in gray.

Across the room

Cast iron pot boils
collard greens to the ready,
purple beets,
roots aplenty
ready spud-white morsels,
slice,
slice,
plop,
plop,
dash of this,
dash of that.

To the back

The kettle whistles,
beckoning near
mason jars of tea leaves in waiting,
the silent pleading begins.

Take me.
Take me.
Won’t you please?

Now before me

Soldered cup of languid herbal tea flakes,
summer’s much maligned gifts,
float anxiously
beneath the steam.

Coming forward

Mother’s tiny hands recoil
a fair warning,
cup’s handle too hot to grasp,
blows fragrant wafts to calm the thirst.

To my right

Father eyes smoke-dried meat
beneath more mason jar entombment,
their strips remaining tall,
forever brave their resolve,
knowing hunger waits for naught.

Around us all

We pick,
choose,
vanquish for the better,
say we,
while habitual prayer
silences the air,
bib-overalled penitence
murmured, then grace..

All is ready

Folded apron dries hands
ladles the bounty,
while outside continuing saber winds
scatter tiny icebound fragments
reminding us of nature’s boundless repertoire.

And so it went

For this youth,
with hidden eyes,
and silent echoes,
through endless seasons
held fast by voices within,
building choruses of soundless words
building for a time…later.

With your words I hearkened back to a farm in the American West in the 1930s. My recollections are similar in some ways and different in others, but they are as clear as yours of a time when we were very dependent on those cold, ice and snow bound days, trapped in houses ill-suited to hold off that cold wind. Carefully partaking of the food that we had available during that time when nothing was fresh and everything was preserved. But mother always provided and we gladly partook.

Another wonderful memoir for partaking.

A wonderfully visual piece, Odinsan. Has a cool physical shape, too. The images unfolded like a short-film; an area you are especially gifted in as a writer. After the holidays we always end up making 'leftover stews' from the collection of things that remain uneaten in the fridge. The ham, turkey, veggies, etc. all get prepped, chopped, diced, spiced, and thrown in the Dutch Oven where they all simmer for some hours. A bowl of that and a chunk of bread still remains one of our favorite meals. Your poem reminds me of that. (-: Continued inspiration... r

I love how you always manage to play on the unexpected. The beauty of a memory poem such as this is that it awakens treasured memories in the reader as well, at least for me. A fine look back during these early new year's days. John
