Piano Ablaze

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

This is an exploration of a grand piano lost in a fire several years ago, and in its rather inordinate representation as one of my greatest losses (following that of my parents and two labs a few years after), I was struck by the memories of playing the instrument and its ability to lift my spirits. Because the surreal image of a melting piano keys and its resistance to the blaze, the two impressions came forth as one. Losing one's prize possession in a house fire, leaves but memories needing to be relived and somehow grounded. (Image by musicsorbonine).

Piano Ablaze
by Odin Roark

Piano ablaze like a melting companion,
like liquid clocks of undulating passage atop the branches,
     stretching their forever time downward
to shield the languid buds of Spring's rhapsody.

Will rhythms of youth
      merge with gratefulness
upon the austerity of our symphony's last movement?

Will the luster of ebony
illumine the memory amidst the swirling ashes
where damper pads desperately work to protect the melodies once mine?

Will the glistening heat of completeness
bring forth yet another incarnation of perpetual motion,
a once calm tonality as the seedling of a measure's beginning,
now the climax of the ever calm,
                            the tremolo of eternal movement?
Melting pianos,
        glacial resonance,
                life with death,
                   inseparable all.

I once returned to see my childhood home, a little shanty that had not a chance against a good storm, and found it was gone. The community was apparently relieved that they had disposed of an eyesore. Few knew and even less cared that they had piled one more disappointment on top of a heap of disappointments on a kid who had not found his footing in a world that seemed to be hell bent of erasing me from it. I survived...and got stronger.

We lose our possessions one way or another. Whether it be a fiery death as you proclaim in your poem or simply our own death when we must pass them on to be played in other ways by others souls. It is interesting that you valued those labradors and that piano more than humans in your life. At least as far as this poem goes.

I believe the melodies you've created in your life will forever reverberate in some layer of the creation. Enjoyed. Peace... r

Heart wrenching! I don't know what I would do if harm would befall my treasured piano that I got as a graduation (from high school) present. My heart melted with each key for you!

Love ya!

What a loss, whose meaning is beautifully expressed here in this rare poem. John
