Poem Artwork
Slumlord
by Odin Roark

Staring at the paint-peeling-ceiling,
I wonder…

Are you the slumlord
no one can ever find?

Are you the sole superintendent,
sole rent collector, and sole owner,
prowling up and down the rickety stairs at night?

Do you play ladies of the night video tapes
in your hovel? Word’s out you hole up in the mouse and rat infested
boiler room.

Do you have partners who all live like you…kings of nothing?
I mean, is there a sort of club for you guys?

We hear you have lady guests every night. Dead lady guests.
How about tonight? I hear sex addiction put a lot of girlies in the movies.
Is Billie Holiday coming tonight, or is this Clara Bow night?
Is Rita Hayworth tucked away in that library?

Yeah, the word’s out in the building

You know…the basics shouldn’t be such a struggle,
even in a bottom feeder rent building like this one.

Maybe that’s why you retire late at night to your boiler room paradise,
tossing a fluorescent pair of dice in the darkness long after the rest of us
are plagued with listening to the faucets drip,
the radiators belch their limited bits of steam,
the neon sign across the street trying desperately to stay alive,
and of course the incessant little claws scratching behind the walls.

No chance you have an immortal soul. How about a plain
ordinary, everyday kind? Probably not possible.

But anyway…

Thanks for listening God… if you’re really there.

Slumlords make me sick. They have no soul........plenty of money but no soul.

Love ya!

I believe this may be the plight of the majority of New Yorkers living beyond their means in slums like this. But I picture the owner of the building who can't be found living on the upper Eastside, Long Island, or even Connecticut. Far removed from these buildings with a one-way cash flow to his/her coffers. Who knows, our president may be one of them?

While I taught in the MBA program at Atlanta University a beautiful and very bright young lady who had graduated from Spelman, Patrice, came to my office.

The first thing she said was, "My father is a slumlord in Houston." She seemed to be confessing to me because I taught my students to temper their greed in business with making things right.

Later, when I became land manager of TSU, surrounded by decrepit apartments owned by slumlords, I learned that her family lived a few miles away in one of the wealthiest parts of town.

Probably the most unique prayer I've ever read. A cutting blend of cynicism and curiosity. Seems only one below 'caught a whiff' of the subtext. "I would rather live my life as if there is a Most High God and die and find out there isn't, than live my life as if there isn't and die to find out there is." Albert Camus. Keep looking up and talking. All the best. r

As a landlord, I take pride in my rental, but it's a crap shoot trying to find good renters. Most do not take care of the property. And this I don't understand. I mean you have to live there, so why not take care of it? And wouldn't you want your security deposit back? Apparently not!

Hah! Appealing to a God that isn't within the lines of this doozy of a poem. One of the best of this kind of poem I have read.

But if you can make it there you'd make it anywhere, it's up to you...

Down to the nitty-gritty with those horrible, miserable slumlords. Lots of sordid imagery here to give texture and tone. John
