Waiting and Dreaming

There are some late night places in Manhattan that afford a look at people wishing…wishing.

Poem Artwork
Waiting and Dreaming
by Odin Roark

Most walk among us unrecognized;

Hairdressers primping in the confection machine mirror.
Tae-bo junkies side-stepping along the platform punching their imaginary opponent.
Wannabe Dwayne The Rock Johnson doing his hourly pushups.
An obvious mental case sticking matches to his imaginary fire.
The blind veteran singing “God Bless America.
A goth of green, purple, black and orange decor
dreams her own kind of hope with a frozen smile.
A pharmacist twitches uncomfortable among the scarries,
while a father and child hold tight their hands.

Having seen it all tenfold, a grinning observer sits on a bench,
glancing up now and then from Tolstoy’s “War and Peace.”

The one unoccupied bench invites an obvious plain-clothes cop to take a seat
along with the pacing and bitching waiter counting his meager tips.

A homeless man shuffles from one end of the waiting area to the other,
his face shadowed by a beat up fedora, reciting Fellini lines to anyone who’ll listen.

A gluttonous rat emerges from the darkness,
stops, retreats back into the distance
where an array of light bulbs swing…“Show Time.”

The subway pushes more air as it emerges from the other end of the tunnel into the platform area,
the light bulbs bounce crazily in the otherwise darkened tunnel,
giving the rat some vermin style entertainment.

The train finally coming to a stop.

The platform people step aboard,
unaware this is but tonight’s wait and dream episode,
another delusion on loan…

until tomorrow night and the next love offering is presented again.

yes, according to one old Chinese Classic, today we enter the 4.5 day period named 'waiting,' which will run till March 12. Based on maturing and readiness of the growing Yang to assume the full-scale offensive against Yin, all things, smelling it, have their inexhaustible patience to wait the warmer days to come. Biding their time until the right moment to act, they go through the process which is less painful for them now because the right moment of approving their existence is close at hand. A timely piece. Cheers, alex

You brought back memories of the "El" I used to travel from place to place when I was in Chicago in the 60's. Great imagery!

Love ya!

Certainly more variety than in a nightspot or a restaurant. But spot on with your description of the temporary residents… Except for the homeless man and the rat.

The one thing my brother insisted when I arrived in Manhattan and was about to take the subway: "Don't stare at anyone!" I did take a peek here and there… ;-)

Back in the summer of '57, a year you know well, I arrived at Manhattan Beach Air Force Station, a staging area for those of us who were shipping overseas. Turns out I had two weeks until my scheduled shipping date, so I was handed a gift of time in which to explore the Big Apple. I went more or less wherever the subway took me. Did my own version of "On the Town." Saw the sights, heard the sounds, and on my last night I met a young lady, about my age at Coney Island. We walked, we chatted up a storm, as we both tried to cram together a life we had not yet lived. But what a goodbye! Tears were welling up in both our eyes (probably streaming from mine), the moon was glistening from hers. It was the longest and most passionate kiss of my young life. I'm pretty sure she called me her "knight in shining armor." She was my Guinevere. She remained my Manhattan Beach, Coney Island, and summer of '57 dream lady ever since. She helped me forget the rats, etc.

I have sat on that subway bench and seen all those things. All images truly captured. . . a snapshot of NY city life, yesterday, today and tomorrow. John
