A Possible Never Ending

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

In a world so determined to keep us adolescent and subservient to power,
perhaps it’s time to consider if we’re willing to be one of the targets, or not. (Image by mymodernmet.com)

A Possible Never Ending
by Odin Roark

Adult life starts whether
by one’s first experience
with a 5 star restaurant’s waft of oregano and garlic,

or…

The eagle’s screech on high,
as a distant parent’s voice swells skyward
at a daughter’s little league homer.

or…

A boy’s first job,
the brown bags with milk bottle on the bottom,
Wonder bread on top,
a cheery “Have a nice day, Mrs. Gilbert.”

or…

Discovered independence initiated
by Tropic of Cancer’s ink and paper visions.

or…

A Camp Pendleton off-base Tijuana week-end pass,
with uniform pressed,
marksman medal polished,
Old Spice aroma alight,
reality’s first XXX performance waiting,
painted eyes eliciting compassion
where Penthouse and Playboy pages once ruled.

To recall a boy of discovery,
is to know those still struggling
to find maturity more rewarding…

At least for some holding to the past,
‘til the end.

As a writer, I find that in order to write a compelling story I sometimes have to leave my "adult" behind. Although, it saved me many times in the past from getting into deep trouble like others did who took such chances without first having enough experience or even just common sense to attempt such extravagance.

These experiences you portray certainly seem to be very real and true.

sounds revolutionary but still, we are one of the targets no matter whether we wish it or not. We are produced and worked out this way throughout the ages to discriminate between the past, present, and future; meanwhile, time is the one integrated whole. Cheers, alex

The boyhood (or girlhood) days strike the imagination with their innocence and daring. The past, if it is still there, is worth looking at, but no need to hold on to. John
