There Are Some...

Is the vast majority of films distributed today released to make us slaves to an agenda designed to have us ultimately pay with captivity?

There Are Some...
by Odin Roark

The film land darkly,
where images of power and greed
in a Beverly Hills restaurant’s mirror
reflect only the shield defending the hidden person,
even as sounds of learned joy from reserved tables
drown out fear's sludge.

Such are the suits exiting the ostentatious office,
filled with the touch of the "deal" upon the shoulder,
unaware yet of captivity where future lonely nights
lead prematurely to inevitable doubts
destined to be anesthetized by any means.

Such disturbances of the darkness
are but the result of isolating success the unaware aspire to,
those innocent star gazers leaving behind the Nebraska cornfields beneath summer moonlight rapidly becoming the nonredeemable past.

Some learn…

But ignore virtue lost forever,
of integrity reduced to whatever it takes,
of dreams captured by the pimps of waste—
the masqueraders of any-time nightmares.

The real Hollywood
remembers moving-magic made accessible to everyone,
knew that empowering untapped imagination would always sell tickets,
where audiences trusted the cinematic connection.

There was a time…

When the theater’s darkened sanctuary for our creative dreams gave hope.

Now, it is a rapidly fading into indifference,
becoming remiss in its power to influence for positive behavior,
instead, evolving into self-serving propaganda of another kind.

Is control and power over our perception all it wishes to be,
a Shylock rendering but shackles for our imagination
as the few creative minds of integrity battle to survive?

Yes, there are some survivors in the making.

I fully don't understand the indoctrination and worship, particularly of young people, of certain lines of cinematic legend that grow sequel upon sequel without any redeeming growth. It is if we are locked in a camp, perpetually living out the same adolescent drunken night out.

But that's where the disposable income… The dollars… Come from.

I am pleased that the Academy Awards see fit each year to present us with cinema that is not of the mainstream but certainly deserves high credit for its uniqueness. In that, not all is lost.

Exactly!! I liked the book better. Movies are taking away the imagination we can conjure up by reading. Yes, todays cinema is sick I what it portrays. Sad.

Love ya!

Survivors in the making would make a great title for this fine poem, it really sums it up in a hopeful manner. John

I haven't been to the movies in years. Anymore they're all action with no story or plot, and lots of people getting shot, or blown up, or ending up dead one way or another.

Your words ring true, as usual. I watched a movie last night from 1988 (Stealing Heaven). I doubt if it ever had a large audience, but it was devoid of all the cinematic obscenities that abound today. It was a simple love story from French history, c. 12th century, when the Catholic was just getting its grip on Europe for many centuries of their vile Inquisitions.
