Sour Sugar

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

or all delusional and refusing-to-grow-up-adults, sometimes a little levity coated skepticism makes the risk of experience palatable. Cynical I'm not. Reality based I am. Oh, don't get me wrong. There is love, void of the mystical power trip that some would have you believe THE REALITY. Of course, in the words of the cryptic comedian Dennis Miller "It's just my opinion, I could be wrong,” but there’s…

Poem Artwork
Sour Sugar

Cotton candy happy,
swirling in it cocoon of anticipation,
coloring itself to fit your mood,
served up by an over-weight bully in the pulpit.

And all for happy.

Doesn’t last long, though,
this euphoria of mind,
today’s relationship,
tomorrow’s Big Deal gone bad.

BFFs the primary choice…

Jock buddies “On the Road” for some,
executive “Mad Men” washroom rewards for others,
with gold watches and golden parachutes for time served.

All become…

Tomorrow’s dumpster of limpid cones,
once swirling with fluffy sugar,
the sweetness of smiles,
the innocence of childhood,
now but a carnival of horrors…

Beware…

Such sweet-laced happy is
sour remorse…coming.

Made me think of the privilege of "certain" men and their use of women and those of "lesser" quality to imbue their values on others. It is strange that so many people, including women look up to that false pretense of superiority and still support it. But you are right, the easy road is never easy and all of these simple happy solutions will turn out to be the long hard way home.

I'm not cynical either although I do write satire that has a cynical sting to it from time to time.

Made me think of what Herodotus said 2500 years ago, "Call no man happy until he is dead." He didn't mean only dead people are happy of course, but that while people are alive they can hide many things behind a mask of superficial happiness.

We all live in our own little worlds, and that is our reality. No one else can see through our eyes, or look inside our minds.

The confluence of sweet and sour is palpable in this poem. In this day and age, what we think is sweet eventually turns sour. And that's reality. John
