Time Looking Around
When duration looks around,
ancient, yet so new, is the thrust of the caveman's spear,
the flood of his primal wail
echoing through the memory of a conscious mind.
Yet…
There are those who walk with false pride as modern man,
losing daily the value of remembrances where much wisdom resides,
blinded by meager entitlement-present and future.
Are we slaves to delusion,
convinced there must be more than the past?
We who might never again appreciate yesterday's history,
for the language on the rocks,
walls,
parchment paper,
video screens,
holograms,
are but now.
How quickly the chronology of experience moves.
Why does progress sometimes choose to forget?
Are we but contemporary cavemen
buried deep inside our own vanity?
The invention of time is always looking around
to recruit those who are slaves to brief passage.
I'm reminded of Naked and Afraid, the TV reality show that pits naked people against wilderness landscapes where they learn that their biggest enemies are heat and cold as well as the little things--insects. Without the proper implements, they sharpen a long branch and create a spear. But then they soon learn, that without a primitive man's skill they can't spear a fish or kill a wild animal of any size because of their ineptness in knowledge about how the spear works.
