Wearing a Mattress

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

With trying to makes ends meet on the minds of so many. Taking a job, any kind of a job, I guess is better than no job, right? Passed a unique version of the walking sandwich-board advertising yesterday. Couldn’t figure out the gender, and the sight couldn’t help but raise an interesting question. Well, don’t know if it was interesting, or just plain irrelevent. Bear with me. I need to lighten up today. (Image by noisey.vice)

Poem Artwork
Wearing a Mattress

Wearing a mattress
And carrying signs,
One for coming,
One for going.

The traffic never ends,
Whether bicycle or car,
Pedestrian or dog.

Message on a stick raised high
"Sale coming up"
"Sweet deal just passed you by"
“Bargain”

And it got me thinking.

This smooth-skinned,
Head-out-the-top,
Mattress wearing,
Sign toting whatever.

Did It used to wear a skirt?
Stilettos and rouge?
Low cut this?
High cut that?

Weird thoughts danced through my head.

Wearing a mattress
Is… well,
Wearing a mattress.
But looking so comfortable?
Had to be convenient, you know.
Lay down.
Demonstrate its comforts.

Then the mattress spotted me.
Could it be thinking
"Comes in all sizes, you know
You name it
Thick? We got it.
Thin? For sure.
Do I know how to wear a mattress, or what?"

Yeah…
You do.

But…

Oh, never mind.

It/He/She probably knew what I was thinking
‘Cause the lips carved silent sweet expletives
‘Till the light turned green.

I strolled through the intersection,
Not so leisurely as usual,
You know?

A new take on sandwich board advertising! You must've been telegraphing your thoughts to have that he/she in a mattress mouth expletives when they're trying to sell you on the latest deal. My dad always loved deals. But he would have to see what's inside the mattress first. ;-)

You are much clearer when you get silly.

Advertisements can be weird, as you have rightly exposed in this poem. Lighten up you did. John
