Adrift

To take responsibility for oneself, think for oneself, such might be the real “to be or not to be” salvation for avoiding a shipwreck in 2018. (Image by dreamstime)

Adrift

Adrift and no island in sight.

Whereas the poet Koyczan suggested
"We are all shipwrecked on this idea
that everything must be explained,"

How sublime for some of us,
this floatation of impotence
taking us where our innate sense of direction
finds us that place,
that anchor,
that surreal ice cream sundae,
that Dodger Dog with onions,
easy on the mustard,
that place where who cares about us doesn't matter,
who pays attention to us adrift is ignored.

For the critical thinking among us,
that place is out there
where the tides make the choices
because we're willing to drift with abandonment.

Where else can moon and sun
or the dastardly cultural hurricanes
speak loudly and freely to us,
show us the leaks in our boat,
the ragged holes of our sails,
the salty brine of our thirst?

And still…

How savagely some cling to controllers’s flotsam ideas,
tiding the ill prepared to the seaweed strewn shoreline,
where anyone might find the FedEx box on shore,
discover the coconut to make one’s only friend,
aloneness finally making emotional connection
while together sending desperate messages
to be rescued.

While our moral compass points to the endless horizon
where we trumpet: “Never the harpoons of the oppressor
will pierce my heart,
my hot dog,
my ice cream sundae,
the search for MY shore”,
the solitary disquiet of isolation,
can be made surreal or intimate,
delivering the ohm of the winds,
or the never ending angry reverberation of a gongs insistence,

Such can become individuality adrift,
determining its own shipwreck.

To do things in "my" terms may seem a bit selfish, but the alternative of following the crowd is probably worse. We don't have to be adrift. We can work together to solve the major problems that face us. I think it is time for us to act in a way that Kennedy suggested… Ask, "What can I do for my country?

the phrase 'on my terms' (see below) is what is contrary to 'adrift.' why an image of carp fish is the symbol of samurai lifestyle? because it is a king-fish, not a raft. Cheers, alex

How I love the 5th stanza (where else can sun and moon. . . ) I don't know how to get the world to engage and anchor, but I am glad to see poetic voices calling for change.

It's all right to be adrift. I have been adrift all my life and I like it that way. If I end up shipwreched, so be it, at least it will be my own shipwreck, as Edward wrote, on my own terms.

So true, so true. Now that I am up there on the plateau of life,
where the air is clearer and the horizon much farther away, I am beginning to see many old objects and issues as if for the first time, and I damn well want to define them and all that I survey on my terms.
