Side Order of Confusion

Appreciating what we have over what we desire is still the art of “One’s” angels, whatever your belief.

Poem Artwork
Side Order of Confusion

Some walk the banks of rivers and shore,
Back alleys and deserted parks,
Seeking,
Or,
Escaping.

Such are the questions of eyes pondering
The night people of one’s fantasies,
Those darker entities,
Wiser perhaps than some,
Unwilling to enfold into reality.

Alone,
Stars and moonless nights
Engulf everyday tolerance,
Embellishing fear and question
With hunger for the un-illuminated
Yet to come.

The open-all-night neon engulfs.

The lost sidle up to decision’s banquet table.

Cold plates on the left.

Hot on the right.

All white.
All right.

The chef of dreams hovers:
“Bet you remember 25 cent beer,
Pearl onions,
Pickles,
And the God-awful olives.

Well, he says,

This ain’t a White Horse Bar,
So enjoy.
You earned it,
Even though
You acknowledge survival
As an unearned trophy.”

That’s how it might go.
Those who traverse Stygian gloom,
Happening upon their midnight-sun smorgasbord diner,
Where alter ego finally stops,
Smells the coffee
And prepares to admit,
“Hold that side order of resentment.
Having almost everything does just fine.
Especially when one gets so much comfort by just being.”

Damn, why won’t words come to my pen on this fuckin' napkin?”

After waitressing for over 20 years, I've never had anyone order a "Side Order of Confusion"!! Gotta love that one! (I'm sure it was that napkin that was of inferior quality and would not allow your fine words to flow onto it.)

Love ya!

I sense a bit of lonely wondering/wandering in these words that so beautifully describes the side of life that is unsure of its purpose. But also the source of great inspiration accomplishment.

Knowing the direction that surveillance is going, even these places of personal aloneness may be shadowed by the voyeuristic tendencies of big brother.

"Those who traverse Stygian gloom" I've known and worked with various of those types over the years; especially in the music business. "They gamble or do anything to find their better half. Will they still have a song to sing when the razor boy comes and takes their fancy things away?" Though I've never been in the subsection of humanity you describe here I can still relate intellectually. I've seen too many lives undone. Thankfully, most of what I've written [on napkins] I've ended up blowing my nose on and thrown out. A thought-provoking write. Peace to you, Odin. r
