A dedication to David Foster Wallace, for writers often belong to families who forget or avoid reading an author’s difficult work. I often wonder if there’s fear of discovery keeping them reader-less of such a talent. (Image by NYMAG)

As I’m No Longer Around
Will you get to know me
As I’m no longer around?
After our endings have evolved into
New beginnings
When questions cease to arise?
What is it about another’s presence
That so often dissuades inquiry?
What is it about knowing someone
Up to a point that signifies,
Satisfies?
Yeah,
Even nullifies
And indemnifies against loss?
Is knowing someone
Dependent on personal experience,
Or can a well-defined shadow,
Unseeable in the sometime harshness of light,
Remain spirited beyond yesterday?
Perhaps…
You’ll scour the dim attic sanctum,
Discover the unread,
The dusty boxes,
Sealed up retrospect,
Where passion’s shadow light still ablaze,
Has remained unread for so long.
I hope you’ll get to know me
As I’m no longer around,
Knowing absence is but a convenience
Available to those seeking forgetfulness.
Love ya!
