Society's Petri Dish

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

In 2016, the official poverty rate in America was 12.7 percent, comprised of 43.1 million people. Reports show an estimated 19.9 percent of New Yorkers are now considered poor, while many of the city's richest only grow richer. The disconcerting report reveals a widening income/survival gap arguably comparable to income/survival gaps in sub-Saharan African countries. (Image Star-Gazzette)

Society's Petri Dish

Haves...

Have-nots.
People.

Survivalists...

Some finding
subway respite,
Salvation Army this,
salvation that,
people in need.

Existence…

Requiring
dumpsters,
trash cans,
soup lines,
cardboard blankets.

Sanity…

Sleeping out of one box
into another,
Dragging routine nightmares perpetual.

Estranged…

Growing up,
hunched over life
destined to be avoided by family,
best friends,
acquaintances,
even favorite enemies.

Busy…

Stringing guitars on Mars,
searching for Zeus in empty power drink cans,
trying to understand,
finding a place in line,
ignoring the reality of unreality,
scratching heads for something alive.

‘Cause…

Suffocation cells stay dank,
caged by sweat-stained bars,
hellfire light,
waste-filled air
while fear hoses the floor,
despair wipes the walls.

All while…

Squeezed in society's petri dish,
the smallest % remains a truth hard to contain,
poised to ooze out,
grow larger beyond some delusional denial by the rich,
where a child’s reality painfully living the gap
may forever remain only a microscopic presence.

Sadness beyond sadness and an ugly mark on the greedy.

Love ya!

I understand and are acquainted with society's petri dish quite well. Avoid it if at all possible.

The family took care. The tribe took care. The village took care. Sometimes, the church took care. Charity took spotty care. In a wealthy nation, poverty does not need to exist. But greed is the essence of life. Even the poor play the numbers game or the lottery and hope to get rich quick. Riches somehow are equated with power, prestige and the good life.

Today it's all about Spencerian survival of the socially fittest. With no one to take care, many fall through the cracks of making America great again.

George Carlin made the observation, that if there was profit in ending poverty, it would be ended in a hurry.

Your message in this fine poem is loud and clear about the haves and the have-nots. Why do the haves have to have sooooo much and still want more? Why do the have-nots have so little and can never hope for more? An existential question worthy (finally) of an answer so that it can be rectified.
