Retiring from the stage experience brings forth many teachings, especially a confirmation: “All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts…” Arriving at an introspective pause is similar to the Ikat fabric results using an Indonesian decorative technique in which warp or weft threads, or both, are tie-dyed BEFORE weaving.

Weaving an Ikat Life
There was once another him.
Oh he was the same flesh and bones.
He even kept track of both his names.
One for the stage.
One for the IRS.
That other him,
the one that migrated,
leaving behind the stage of make-believe,
venturing across landscapes of real-life drama,
found that dramaturgy had taught him well.
Back then…
It was gradual,
this departure from his norm.
Everyday beginnings arose before dawn,
flicked its prickly tendrils across nocturnal escape,
awakening his senses free of alarm clocks,
Elbows from a bed partner,
Or wet lickings from a dog.
And…
Something else was different on rising.
Gazing out the window,
nothing but time that he now owned
put him at the ready to explore
pre-dawn darkness with illumination.
How much laughter and stories
He had to share
He was ready to run into,
rather away from other’s determining
who he was, and would truly be in the future.
But…
What unexpectedly streamed forth
was his Ikat life,
the color-shades of his past,
layers of experience,
tinted patterns of what hopefully
would become his long-awaited rainbow of insight,
his future-weave,
void of mistake’s knots.
Patience delivered the finished spectral,
a tapestry of wisdom’s reward.
Love ya!
