Park Bench Reality

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

We often think we have a handle on the only “correct,” reality, but once in a while, we might look around and consider the more inordinate kind… the kind that manages to muster up a smile at unexpected times. (Image by David Blackwell)

Poem Artwork
Park Bench Reality

Come spring,
he wasn’t fond of birds singing,
or trees turning green,
little flowers sprouting here and there,
for he desired bleak skies with their short days
and long nights.

He preferred cloistering himself on his bench,
watching his thoughts roam,
imagining himself an entire
homeless family with few possessions,
grateful with comfort and shelter for the night,
the time when stars could talk to him.

Most of all,
he liked to smile,
knowing he was here today,
maybe gone tomorrow,
the forever hide-and-seek dark swirl sneaking up on him at night
trying to blow out the lit match in his head.

“But not tonight, poet,” he used to tell me,
his determined smile always there.

“Not tonight.”

“Catch you later?” I’d whisper as I left
with my note pad and pencil,
grateful for another few minutes
taking in his special brand of reality.

“No worry. My flame’s still holdin’ on.”

Felt like I was there with you. As I age, I don't seem to find the time or the inclination to go to a park bench and sit there, watching the world go by. I take it, that you really did go down to the park and take notes on life from the elderly there who routinely sat on those benches and smiled at passersby. A slice of memory nicely presented.

Love love love this! Sometimes one sees the ones on those park benches. Should we feel sorry for them or are they feeling sorry for us? I bet their minds are freer than most! 'Met a guy who hangs out at a BP station when it's cold. He has a guitar and plays it there. (somehow the workers allow this) The customers love it. They throw money in his guitar case and I'll bet you he makes more a day than most people who work and have bills, family problems, overwhelming stress!! Who's the lucky ones??? Again, love this piece of work.

Love ya!

this proves the fact that each one has one's own way of living. . . yes, we are good at imitating each other; however, what is yours yours and nothing can change your destiny except yourself, i believe, because you are the only one who knows yourself, your personality compound's proportions, from within. Cheers, alex

This short narrative is just perfect, loved reading it. "Not tonight," indeed.
