Teetotalers of Knowledge

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

In a global society that seems to be getting more and more comfortable with lies, corruption and unprincipled decision making, one is left to ponder where one stands in the conundrum of survival. (Image by jacekyerka)

Teetotalers of Knowledge

Wisdom watches from the shorelines,
tearfully accepting how the intervention of ignorance has given minions
freedom to abandon the once addictive habit of learning,
allowing the currents of opportunity to evaporate
as they embrace their own status quo,
choosing to drift, rather than swim forward.

Everywhere, the waters of intelligence rapidly stagnate,
and like a global AA meeting advocating the maxim
that finding one’s life preserver comes from within—
not by virtue of another’s escapism—
addicts of unawareness stare with vacuous void,
addressing little of the mind’s ability to recover,
become buoyant again, and reach out for
man’s most cherished gift.

How lonely the realm of knowledge has become,
languishing on the banks of rapidly diminishing synaptic current,
its adrift waters finding only polluted and uninformed expression to cling to.

Mournfully, erudition is beginning to gasp,
as struggling depths of truth find the surface harder and harder to reach,
even as logic extends its hands for rescue,
and cognition awaits its call to assist,
reason remains incorruptible.

This one strikes home. I have often wondered how those game show contestants seem to know trivia to the nth degree. Yet, it makes me wonder how they function in real life. Jimmy Kimmel's little sidewalk interviews with people on the street about their answers to lies that are told to them, clearly show us that most people don't seem to have a clue about current events, history or anything that really matters.

Perhaps it is because life is generally easy if you just have money and can spend it any way you please. With so many options and so much technology making things easy for us, we can tend to go with the flow and not ever accomplish anything. Makes us easy targets for robot masters who have all the answers for us.

As you rightly suggest, there is no depth any more, people only float on superficial waters and seem to be satisfied. They miss nothing and don't even know what they lost. Sad.
