We Writers of a Different Need

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

It’s easy to get lost in thinking our goal should be mass consumption of our work through commercial publication. But, for some of us, it is the reward of fewer numbers, the small handful who by reading our work suddenly realizing the power of words is nurture their discovery process of self-worth,
just as it often does for the writer. (Image by pinterest)

We Writers of a Different Need

A breed of expression
only few can know,
even fewer choose to understand.

Residing in a place
where movement of mind and spirit
roams the beyond of ones’ shadows,
arresting the possible
forward to the obvious.

Pursuing the why of what,
that haven the inner-self finds comforting,
where once lurked but a dark flirtation
with a revelation beneath life’s façade,
the now of joy laboring fearlessly
amidst inner-light and vision.

What only few have known,
now reaches out to many who yearn to know.

All that is necessary
is at our fingertips,
ready to become a voice
for many of mute spirit,
starving to escape
echoless halls of stagnation,
conscious of their shackled impotence,
yet unaware beneath the fear,
expression awaits liberation.

And so it continues…

With pencil in hand or keyboard,
we return to the page,
not as saviors,
but as needful messengers
creating and sharing discoveries
hopefully worth reading.

Some of us find it often perplexing…

This identity with simply being writers of modest needs,
okay with not reaching a profusion of recognition,
accepting the reward of making a difference
in the lives of a few.

Such is reward enough for we writers of a different need.

A keen (and obviously personal) insight. We do start out with an exaggerated sense of self. I can attest to that. The striving-for-success-at-all-costs-man I used to be has a far different incentive for action and accomplishment now. Personally speaking: Being a trending, successful, and recognized individual in this present dark society can be filled with miserableness. Reaching many readers positively, though, with your work, can offer blessings to the writer like no other. Through it all wisdom is mandatory. Thanks. You are one of a small handful of poet/writers whose work remains edifying to me. Peace... r

I think you described my need as a writer exactly. While I find your esoteric prosetry difficult to comprehend at times, I selected you as one of my very few favorite authors almost immediately. And, with your daily offerings have opened my eyes to a whole different way of looking at each day.

To know that now that I am posting a chapter of my new novel as each one is being written and having several authors here so eager to see the next one, is very heartening. In spite of what professional authors insist, my freely offered work, enjoyed by many, is very rewarding in itself without a paycheck.

I love this, Odin!

To the majority of readers, there is rarely the question of 'what sort of a writer is the author'. For those readers, knowing the the difference between writing for commercial gain, or writing for self expression, is not a requirement.

I wonder how many times I have heard it said "Oh that was a good book ...but I forget who wrote it"? Too many I guess but that's the way of it.

So 'The Few' get my vote every time. They are the one's for whom it matters. A form of distant friendship, one might say. x

You're right. It's not in the numbers. I have often thought that if there is one reader out there, then the effort is worth it. As for myself, I never know what I begin as a poem may end as a poem. It's all a great mystery, although at times I try to explore in words this mystery and the mystery of the Muse. A fine write of a poem, Odin, for the few who care.

Great pondering poetry Odin! You seemed to have changed your style. This begs the question, "Why do we write?" and the answer is for so many reasons. At times, it is simply a release of expression or bottled up tension. Then, after it is posted it brings joy or at least confirmation from others that they are not alone. Then there are times when we write for friends and family. Hoping one day that it touches a special person. Many times, poems and short stories touch lives of people who we barely know. Sometimes our writing travels to many countries and brings the writer much joy to know that someone in a foreign land truly speaks the same language! Then there are times when writers write to become famous. This can happen but it can bring disappointment and sadness to the struggling writer. So perhaps it's better to write as a means of artistic expression like most artist do. Then writing can become challenging and fun. Then someday, when we finally leave planet earth our family will really read the poetry and books we left behind. That could be like finding buried treasure for some and maybe the BEST reward of all.

May peace be with you Odin as you continue this marvelous journey!

John Michael
