Perhaps there’s more to life than just “this life.” (Image by tanahelene)

Poem Artwork
Time

When the clock’s hands travel,
Does its inner workings wonder
As it watches us gaze at its timeless movement,
We subtracting time remaining,
It knowing time has no limit?

Perhaps it sees us stare at numbers
As if they be tenacious landmarks in stop motion orbit,
Digits holding like lonely sentinels
Guarding the fixed passages of life’s journey.

We watch this precise start and stop of perpetual movement
Challenging distance and time,
Wanting immortality to be a possibility,
Thinking life might cease,
Oblivious to existence knowing not a demise,
Only a change in form.

How innocent our youth,
Apprehensive our adulthood,
Anxious our aging experience
Wanting the end to be but a new beginning.

To avoid disappointment,
To embrace the unknown as wisdom-in-waiting,
To console loved ones that doubting is waste.

Lest we forget,
We are matter.
Matter cannot be destroyed.
Such knows not end.

For some,
Death is only to see a dark hallway,
Or a cliché tunnel of light.
For some of us,
No frills and sanctimonious knowing does it.
There’s merely trust in continuance.

Oh! This is so excellent! I so agree with your fact you wove into your work of art and that is, "Matter cannot be destroyed.". Write on, Odin!

Love ya!

Some very deep thought in this prosetry that once again points to the insignificance of our self-importance. It is interesting that we have 10 fingers or digits to count on to come up with a whole mathematical system based on ones and zeros.

And time as you describe it, seems to rest on repetitions of six. 60 seconds in a minute. 4×6 hours in a day. 5×6 days in a month plus or minus. 2×6 months in a year. A fascination with time based on, primarily the rotation of the earth at about 1000 mph but not understood when the ancients at Stonehenge and other sites in Europe and then in the Mayan civilization in Central America dependent upon the calculation time to plant crops and carry out other rituals they felt key to their survival.

But as you point out, our matter survives beyond the 3+ billion years that it took for humans to develop on the earth and become aware of time and the mathematics we can derive from it. Surely this process is not only ours on the earth but something that has been going on in the universe since the formation of the universe 15 billion years ago ±.

Your message of trust does not go unnoticed. Trust seems to be the underpinning of our future (time's) perspective in which indeed there is some kind of continuance. It would be unthinkable to go through an entire life such as we have to have it all end in oblivion. A fine poem partly because it sets one thinking.
