Finding peace amidst the chaos is but one of the chores of Zen belief. Such focus was stirred up some time ago while watching a Colbert interview with Garret Keizer, author of the book "The Unwanted Sound of Everything We Want: A Book About Noise." (Image by flickr)

Silencing Noise
Like a hooded falcon at rest
our inner silence asks little.
Even in one’s beginning…
Fearing tumult at birth's door,
mothers intuitively send the quiet asunder,
knowing attachment bodes ill
one's preamble to being.
As birth’s umbilical holds fast the random flings of arms and legs,
silence ultimately gives way to emergence,
crawling, walking, and finally running.
And like the talon-cinched safety giving way to liberty,
the falcon in silence has prepared for the flight to freedom’s beckoning,
For all seeking self-determination,
life’s adventure moves past yesterday's advance,
leaving even further behind birth's soft caress,
for modernity's torrid insistence urges growth beyond
one's birthright, one's ambition, one's any and everything,
even as life’s inner silence remains true to purpose.
For those accepting outer noise as but an illusion,
mere distraction begging to disrupt one’s quiet guide,
the journey of listening to the stillness within and rejoicing,
continues on as Nature’s maternal gift of life and love.
