Asylum

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

With so many frightening politicians into the “better inaction than midterm defeat” syndrome, cowardice behavior and unprincipled governance prevails, seldom offering an understanding of differences between illegal aliens and asylum seekers.. And yet thousands of asylum seekers continue to confront nature and walk the walk to the border, some 1,000 miles away.

Poem Artwork
Asylum

So many must think…

As day breaks,
might it be time?

From your shack,
or whatever other cover
you’ve hidden yourself
away from the threat of death,
you slip away on foot,
the t-shirt on your back,
a piece of paper with a relative’s name
in case something happens to you,
wearing boots,
no belongings,
save a topo map.

Just you and your babe in arms.

Tapachula’s streets and back alleys
are empty with only
cats and rats
having their sunrise duel.

Hours pass.

Miles mount.

Thirst and hunger pursue.

Jungles behind.

Deserts ahead.

A pause in a ghost town cemetery offers respite,
as hands gripping baby and flower containers,
hold yesterday’s rainfall,
its fetid taste welcome to exhaustion’s parched throats.

A long-ago deserted church,
its rickety door hanging on rusty hinge,
birds in the bell tower perched stoic, silent.

To enter,
to rest in the pew,
or wander into the dried-up cornfield,
swap sweat-caked clothes
for sun-bleached scarecrow garb,
stretch out on the heat-baked husks,
hold baby tight, try to smile,
stare at the sky and have a long talk with…

No, not him.
That hasn’t worked out too well, so far.

Better off giving clouds some credit
for help with the sun so far,
and hopefully the many tomorrows ahead.

A look at the map reveals only
eight hundred miles to the border.

Asylum.

We used to be a beacon of hope and promise, but that beacon is rather dim right now. I can only hope it shines bright again.

A poignant look at the plague of so many caught up in criminal and political behavior that becomes impossible to tolerate. For South and Central America, the border of the United States in North America is a shining opportunity that, while impossible to reach sometimes, holds out hope, if not, reality. We never know exactly how many people die trying to escape the death and inhumanity they face in their own communities.

It's the same the world over. So many fleeing oppression with very little options as to where to go. Usually, all that waits up ahead is starvation and death. For those that do make it where they hear rumors they can be saved, poverty.

I feel the yearning and the hope.....hope the strongest! We must never give up hope. We must strive to make "things" better for our young.

Love ya!

Jane
