Vulnerable Self

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

While editing chapter 6 of “Mind Puppets,” I found myself detouring in this bit of prosetry, reminding me that playacting by many outside the confines of stage and screen is a means of survival few may understand. As global countenance continues its masquerade into obsessive make-believe, consciousness is left having to consider the obvious alternative. (Image by Spolaric)

Poem Artwork
Vulnerable Self
by Odin Roark

Suckling the tit of power’s engorged conceit,
fame-junkies stay hooked on their insecurity,
like a populous of emphysema victims
pulling behind their processed oxygen,
the need to keep their bubble of make-believe pumping.

Ambition often longs for more frequent feeding times,
those memorable moments of panic when the applause meter,
the cradled effect of being held close to the nipple of sustenance,
looks as if it’s waning.

From craving’s captive infancy,
through childhood and the perpetual adolescence of identity,
staying in lock step for mealtime ticket punchers
in order to reach life’s grown up food, remains elusive,
forever teasing us toward a different kind of gratification,
unaware the identity-vacuum is the single place no one escapes,
once we have sentenced ourselves.

How alluring the entrapment,
even as it touts a way to escape,
convincing the fettered emotions
that an improved fix-it plan exists,
extending beyond the delusional captivity of ego
and the fame, fortune and power imaginings.

Unfortunately

Quite often, at some point,
the notoriety we thought was ours,
the wealth we felt entitled to,
and the supremacy we felt was earned,
is taken back, lifted from our grasp,
leaving us wailing from within as we revisit
the perpetual vulnerable self… once again.

Your first two lines say so much, Odin! Oh, my! Do they! "Ambition"? 'Not my bag. I do have a great time watching it walk on by! I just enjoy reading and writing and perhaps making someone feel something if anything at all! I do know that I enjoy your style!

Love ya!

The perpetual vulnerable self is always there. There is no way of getting rid of it, so one might as well learn how to live with it. This speaks to me because one day I stopped trying to control the feeling of vulnerability and somehow got used to the feeling and even appreciating it. You write about the cravings and ambitions with great precision as a process that inevitably seems to end in disillusion. It's like an endless cycle which makes me think of the notion of samsara. I feel like I have just read something surgical and spiritual at the same time.

As I read many authors' attempts at fame, I see their lonely plight exposed through halfhearted attempts that will never be fulfilled, I grow concerned. Some of them may have reached a certain level in their various endeavors, but are now in decline, grasping at straws of their former excellence. Sad but true, like your poetstry so eloquently describes.

Potent imagery and sentiments. Certainly the human body is more vulnerable than the products of the human mind. Peace... r

You covered everything with a broad brush, but pinpointed what needed to pinpoint. Noticeably . . .

"like a populous of emphysema victims
pulling behind their processed oxygen,
the need to keep their bubble of make-believe pumping."

I am one of those "populous of emphysema victims" and I use it or I would have died. It keeps me alive. I also have assorted other "processed" thing which I hardly ever use. But as I sit in front of
the monitor, which is most of the day, I am securely hooked up to "processed oxygen."

Just saying. . . .
