- With so many masks vying for center stage, it would seem intermission couldn’t come too soon. As writers, however, we choose to pay attention, to find “truth” worthy of exploration. But what of those who flounder outside truth, those forever standing in awe before their chosen escape-belief? Yes, both conservative and liberal convictions are getting harder and harder to distinguish. Welcome to the 2018 election campaigns.

Pantalone Masquerade
Who walks among us
noticing not the
spurious attention-lights
flooding eyelids ever open?
Such eyes peering from vacuous arrogance
remain impervious to reality’s needs,
knowing little of involuntary teardrops
that rise to cleanse pollutant messages
that so often clutter truth's path.
For those paying attention,
brazen dishonesty seeps through
the slits of glistening façade,
revealing the deceit beneath masks of enticement.
Sadly…
Political theatre is long running,
unblinking eyes staying open,
never sleeping,
forever duping wide-awake audiences
patiently waiting out expository fatigue.
Some persuade by day,
others by night,
dilated pupils made friendly
with layers of surrounding colors,
undulating caldrons of platitudes
glazing over the waiting eyes of subservience,
as persuasive voices brandish messages
onto deafened ears of acquiescence.
For nominative-masks of manipulation
are unreadable masquerades,
patronizing invitations
addressing innocence with praise,
ignorance with pandering.
Modern day Napoleons these,
ambitious eyes never closing,
vulnerable egos financially fortified,
political daredevils bungeed over slippery slopes,
preparing the next attention-grabbing-jump,
anticipating oohs and ahhs
from duplicitous snake-oil remedies taking effect.
And then one day…
These actors from both parties with masks,
create minions of somnolent followers,
furthering neither peace nor the sanctity of breath,
and become elected.
Such continues the performances
of Washington’s army of Pantalones,
its very own commedia dell’arte,
parading another year of a country’s heritage,
the never-tiring masks of...?
Pity yet fear greeds face. It has another one. Apt and timely!!! (How much more of this charade, and a poor one, can self thinking people take??!!!)
Love ya!

Our junior senator wannabe president with his smug look and old money allies does not even answer my petitions, however well stated. On the other hand, our senior senator, looking so senatorial and even presidential, at times, is very sure to give me a well spun insight into why he will vote for this or that I have posed in the petition. The one term that really bothers me is when he always refers to his making sure that he takes care of his "stakeholders." It doesn't take much intelligence to figure out who those special people are.

"Undulating cauldrons of platitudes glazing over the waiting eyes of subservience," Gulp. . . and so true.
"As persuasive voices brandish messages onto deafened ears of acquiescence," You have outdone yourself on this one.
Bravo.
