History's Diligence

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Once, traveling quieter attractions invited further pause as Time reminded us all of Nature’s part in preserving the planet’s history. Eroding air continues its contribution to the world’s chaotic threat to such ancient heritages.

History’s Diligence

The spirit,
The soul,
Your choice,
Absorbs onto its pages
Sentient recitals,
Some conscious,
Others of shadowy stealth.

Visiting Delos ruins,
Where fallen ancient marble cloisters
Baked in millennias-old sun,
Marbled nakedness reclined in grass-protected embrace
Like chaste lovers of mind.

Tourist-fresh olives
Became perfect companions,
Alongside locally-aged wine
As pauses among history’s headstones
Unveiled shadowed sandal and toga-clad voices,
Philosophy destined to echo such inaugurals
Onto book-bound pages.

Looking up,
It seemed only proper
To toast the timeworn breezes
Holding afloat swallows of old
Awaiting moonrise
And another day’s passing.

Smiling induced memory,
As eternity seemed to enjoin my eavesdropping
On Time revisiting Time.

Another glance at the resting columns,
Lesson’s shameless lovers unadorned,
Hastened further sips of wine’s whispered patience,
Urging desire to be at one with the honoring
Of such prescient antiquity determined

To survive for future’s wisdom.

Your poem reminds me of our trip to the Olympic ruins Greece
The guide told us to run the track where the ancients put their feet
So I ran like a teenager sprinting in the old dusty Olympic track
It was a one time thrill into History and it's good to look back!
History is fascinating and it teaches us so much about life.
For, History will repeat itself if we don't learn from the past life.

I have visited Delos, Delphi, Sabrata, Leptis Magna, Pergammon, and many other places and felt much the same as you express in this fine poem, history always tells a story, sometimes whispered directly into the ear for those who listen.

Your words create a scene the reader becomes a part of and these fine ruins steal a part of the reader as well. A fresh olive, please?

Love ya!

Jane
