Inner-Companion

A prosetry exploration on being alone in a big city where creating unique company, especially late night, early morning, is often the only means for managing one’s sanity. (Image by Storman)

Inner-Companion

His kind of companion never had an expiration,
Nor did he remember when he found it.
Like a worry stone in his pocket
Except it wasn’t a stone.

His pocket was especially comforting
In romantic movies,
All night fast food joints,
Dark barrooms,
Starbucks’ lounges,
Rain soaked streets,
Anyplace he was alone.

Like the pass key to a dream,
His companion stayed in his pocket
A comfort as he sat alone
In his favorite subway car,
Always at night,
Always stopping at empty stations,
Year after year.

Then at one stop,
A voice from nowhere said,
“This is it.”

Dreamer as he was,
He exited onto an empty platform,
Save for the angel-like woman in all white,
Smiling,
Gesturing to follow.

He’d never seen such a bright color
Streaming down a subway exit before.
Yes, he thought,
Maybe this is it,
My stop,
My very own exit/entrance.

He smiled back.

Peering into the sunlight
He fingered his pocket,

That place of sanctuary,
But his hideaway companion was moving on.

Sad and mysterious at the same time. Is mystery the alluring veil that hides the cruelest pain? Striking poem, beautiful writing...

You have a gift, my dear man! Thanks very much for this poem! Did the companion stop him from committing suicide, or did the companion leave him, because it was the end of his life? Very suspenseful.

Could be a split personality… A hedge against the insanity of loneliness. I can't help thinking that perhaps the end of the line was the salvation of death, when the companion finally departs and quits whispering in one's ear. Perhaps. Perhaps not.

Ay! We're always alone...yet never really. We are our own best companions. If only we accept that.
Though a hand to hold, a good book (like emotional/psychological/spiritual handholding through time and space) and other pocket companions certainly help us on our way.
"That place of sanctuary..."
Well said.

That moment of moving from half-life, to Life. The lifting of the gauze over ones eyes. The parting of the mind's clouds, letting the sun peek through.
Ah yes, and the soft farewell to that tiny entity, for they have another pocket to inhabit, another soul to support.
Brilliant xx

dark, dreamy, mysterious, leaving all to the imagination of the reader. Love it.
