Light's Eternal Shadow

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

A young man's imagined after-death pondering following his first exposure to a mausoleum. Such was the occasion when my father first told me of the sometimes-loveless seclusion of wealth’s memory. (Image by pinterest)

Poem Artwork

Light’s Eternal Shadow

Here in the musty confines of finality…

I, the prisoner.
You, the small window.
Together, through stained-glass eyes,
Ponder skies where nothing ends.

Here,
Where sunlit rays seduce,
Become shackles,
And hint at pleasure,
While painfully refusing closure.

How persistent
The innocence of silence,
Parading Nature’s selected rays
Amidst dust motes drifting,
Alighting,
Enfolding,
Sharing cosmic love,
Asking not,
Giving all.

Why…

In this room's coldness,
This tomb where once-life is enshrined,
Must you return each morning
Only to fade back to,
The light’s eternal shadow?

There certainly is no returning "to dust" when one is encased in concrete and tempted by a window letting daily light partially in. I think it better to be cast in the window as ashes or eaten by worms.

Certainly speaks to what wealth begets you.

Some fine lines in this poetic interlude:

"Ponder skies where nothing ends."

"How persistent the innocence of silence." (so true)

Excellent.
