Toy MInds

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

At times, it’s easy to slip into a child’s fantasy and ask: “My doG, is this really humanity at its best?” Of course, we’re grown ups, right? Kids are just… suffering our lack of maturity. Sure. Yet, we can’t admit our innate ability to rationalize what death is, and what death should not be, is becoming mere fog in a landscape of moral erosion. Is one death given solace and justice by taking another’s life? Perhaps. Perhaps not. Such is the conundrum of Capital Punishment continuing as a work in progress. (Image by pinterest)

Toy Minds

Such a childhood.

This place of day and night shifts,

Mommy and Daddy

working night shifts.

Such fun, thinks he.

Wind-up toys

tested by mommy and daddy.

An assembly line of pure pleasure,

thinks he.

Inspect the spring,

wind up,

let it rip!

There they are,

the seven-member toy squad.

Wind,

lift,

point,

lower their rifles,

oh, so quickly.

Convicted one shot,

Falls.

Wind.

Gets up.

Wind.

Falls and gets up.

Painted black blindfold holding safe.

Down the conveyor belt comes…

The grave diggers.

Not working so well.

Wind.

Nothing.

Wind.

Nothing.

Mommy and Daddy lean in.

Stare.

“Why are the shovels so heavy?”

Wind.

Nothing.

Mommy and Daddy stare at each other.

Maybe that’s how it’s supposed to be.

Maybe for a purpose?

Mommy and Daddy wonder?

Me?

Just having fun watching…

For the moment.

The shovels of grave digging are too heavy with doubt. I am concerned about those wrongly convicted through a flawed justice system. But I'm not against capital punishment for those who are truly evil. As we learn more about DNA and the brain, I believe we'll find out that certain behavioral characteristics thought to be learned, are actually genetic. I see no point in warehousing for lifetimes criminals of vile acts. Or giving them any opportunity to reproduce.

Never underestimate the power of words left dangling
and the creativity of innocent minds:
Reminds me of that nice bear from the days of my youth:
"Glady, the cross-eyed bear for Jesus." I found him in
"every Christmas car I ride." Wind up toys have their own
imaginations and lives.

Excellent, Odin! A child's mind sees how NOT to act just by watching adults fumble and screw everything up. I love your word flow and the imagery is animated in my mind.......what a scene!!

Love ya!

Jane
