Steel Walkers

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

- In a world where courage is often given a mockery nod, there are many who know courage well, whether in the battle field, police and fire work, or of just plain putting up with the erosion of principals our country is experiencing. But for shear physical courage—outside of the award-winning documentation of “Free Solo” where Alex Honnold climbed El Capitan without any mechanical or rope assist—there is possible no other daring of the heights to compare with the “Steel Walkers.” (Image by pinterest)

Poem Artwork

Steel Walkers

On any seasonally workable day on 5th Ave,

to gaze above is to see up twenty or more stories,

men walking the girders of a high-rise construction.

Come lunch…

Legs dangle over a piece of steel support,

and this special breed of no-fear professionals

relax into some comfort food.

Like the Native American bridge walkers,

those brave hearts that walked the cables

of Manhattan and Brooklyn bridge construction,

the tradition continues,

bringing to mind many a thought.

What is it that lures so much ethnic diversity

to the dangers of heights?

Is there something we

of the everyday mindset

can’t fathom?

Perhaps it’s the unpolluted air,

sound,

vision,

feel of the wind,

taste of biological fear controlled.

Then again,

Maybe it’s just a gift of natural courage.

Interesting questions raised in this poem. I have often wondered about these people, since I myself couldn't manage very well at those heights with the dizzying vertigo that ensues at great heights.
