Unshakable Memories

Remembering my grandmother as perhaps she remembered hers. (painting by J. Coates)

Poem Artwork

Unshakable Memories

Now stored in box and photo-album clutter.

lives of molted scales once living

remain like residue of moths

entrapped in webs of shadow,

languid as history's decay.

Yet…

How beautiful the shifting shards of light

play upon the undulating dust of memories past,

as east to west sun's daily journey peeks warmly

through snapshot’s precious reverie.

Attics whisper love's security,

for the huddled beneath shawl and finger worn gloves

rocking gently within imaginary maternal care,

where the once child of playful secrets

embraced dolls nestled close,

even as brother's toy soldiers stood at the ready.

Alas…

Today's sanctuary exists

but by the grace of shingled repair,

still reminding once smooth,

now wrinkled skin,

that memories of the heart

know not the gravity of time.

Some would say…

Lonesome days remain forever,

just as gathering sands

merely shift atop the dust of occasioned past

making ready Time's next layer.

Yet pleasant thought.

tomorrow's oasis of history,

begins yet another long journey,

from conception to life,

from playful imagination

to reality remembered.

Mere seedlings now,

becoming forever growing collages

of someone's unshakable memory tomorrow.

Being a first generation American, I had no grandparents here and knew none. Perhaps that's why I go overboard being a Grama! I love this poem and am able to "experience" one through your words!

Love ya!

So true. I'm left wondering how I will be remembered by my offspring.

Indeed, some memories are unshakable, as you have beautifully described here in this fine poem. Grandmothers live forever.

How very well do I remember my grandmother on my Father's side? Very, very well indeed. My lasting memory of her is watching her take out a crow in the top of a tree many yards across the little road where she lived. She was the crack-shot of the family. Maw-Maw. Remember her wonderfully . . .
