Rites

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

– In a day of hyperbole, there’s need to remember some facts that continue to harken to TRUTH. War continues to epitomize hell. “Why can’t we all get along…” a distant land’s unanswerable. As reported, on “4/9/19 - Three U.S. Marines were killed when their convoy hit a roadside bomb on Monday near the main U.S. air base in Afghanistan, U.S. officials have confirmed. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.” (Image by national compass)

Rites

Friends know early,

this thread so fine,

tensile power beyond strength.

Some played in cornfields,

flipper-crutch at the ready.

Some wandered Harlem's alleys and dumpsters

hoping another day's scavenge would suffice,

Lord and one’s knife willing.

Friendship in waiting…

Naked clad, we lined up arm’s length,

between us as the sergeant barked,

our packages passing full inspection,

our coughs without problems.

This day, our eyes search with compassion and pity,

friendship once khakied and spit-shined,

now but mud-caked Kevlar protected warriors.

Holding on together…

Yet roadside hatred and brutality await a footstep,

ready to destroy those memories of cornfields past,

of garbage once precious,

of friendship once distant.

Determined…

We know first may be last,

these rites of preparation,

even as we swallow our fear

and challenge the embrace of eternity.

In the midst of tragedy, I do not forget humanity's bravery, kindness, generosity, and love. Human beings will hate in homes and on roadsides...but not all. Not always. Light banishes darkness.

Armies do little to fight terrorism. The collateral damage alone leads to a worse situation every time an army goes after a small terrorist cell. When will we learn?

It's been our longest war, and I question if we've learned or gained anything.

What a waste of fine people. What are we doing over there. Let them kill each other, not the brave, innocent youth who don't know better.

What a lament for the soldier/s! They are now all dressed the same. Yes. It's true, Odin.

Love ya!
