A Fearful Mind's Mirage

A short exploration into a societal malaise that, like it or not, portends permanence, unless… (Image by stefanoscata)

Poem Artwork

A Fearful Mind’s Mirage

Anxiety…

Being often but a blip in time and space,
akin to watching sand dunes walking,

where beneath a seemingly permanent eclipse,

disturbance brushing ever so close to the sand,
displaces those tiny grains of buried discomfort,

rendering some to temporary grounding,

and perhaps a peaceful calm.

Might it be…

Remaining anxious,

is to avoid the possibility that gusts of hope

could lead to shifting sands of chance,

and the acceptance of an oasis in one’s desert

a place where trust in the unknown could be

all that is needed to quench the thirst of survival

is but a mirage?

Fear…

Our real nemesis,

knowing mirage doesn’t work,

seeks to choke us with illusions.

Fear is immobilizing and is so much worse than being anxious. Having anxiety comes and goes, I believe, but FEAR is hell, hon, when you are experiencing it. Fine-ness flows from your pen.

Love ya!

A nice allegory for the way things are going using a desert scenario. Henry David Thoreau wrote, "Most men lead lives of quiet desperation." As you have written, just below the surface, so many of our population are desperate. Partly because of their own largess like using too much of their easily offered credit, or a disease like alcoholism, and addiction to gambling, or worse, hooked on one kind of drug or another. Trying to be healthy by using junk medicine rather than changing their lifestyles. So much angst out there. The very people who grab onto anything positive they can find, even if it lies to them out of both sides of its mouth every time it speaks. Bound in hypocrisy, like fake medicine, those in need gather around like following Pied Piper.

It is sad that science is neglected for rumors and conspiracy theories. But the reckoning will come and people will change overnight when they find themselves in dire straits. like when they real threat created the "greatest generation."
