Shadowlight Impassioned

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Authors often have friends and families who forget or avoid reading the writer’s work while he or she was alive. I often wonder if there’s fear of discovery that keeps these relationships knowledge-deprived. (Image by pinterest)

Shadowlight Impassioned

Anonymous…

Will you get to know me
When I’m gone

After endings evolve into
New beginnings
When questions cease to arise?

What is it about another’s presence
That so often dissuades inquiry?

What is it about knowing someone
Up to a point that signifies
Satisfies
Nullifies
And indemnifies against loss?

Is knowing someone
Dependent on personal experience
Or can a well-defined shadow
Un-seeable in the sometime harshness of light
Remain spirited beyond yesterday?

Might you someday scour the dim attic sanctum
Discover dusty boxes
Sealed up retrospect
Where passion’s shadowlight still ablaze
Has remained unread for so long?

Is there a chance you’ll get to know me
When I’m gone?

What if absence is but a convenience
Available to those seeking forgetfulness

Rather than closure?

Shadowlight ponders.

One thing is for certain. I know little of my grandparents' lives, probably because I never asked, except during the time from my first memories of being with them, and then, being away most of the time, didn't even know what was going on up until they died. I do recall a letter that my mother showed me from an ancestor from around 1900. It described how they lived at that time and was very rewarding to read. I wish there was more writing like that from my family. A few years ago, my mother wrote about her early life in rather brief terms, and then told us not to share it with anyone but family.

So, writers need not worry. If our family does not read us in our lifetime, perhaps some future generation will be happy to peruse what we have written and get to know us better than anyone in this generation has.

"Is there a chance you'll get to know me
when I'm gone?"

A love, probing question, full of longing and melancholy to the reality that you touch upon in the poem that no one takes notice when we are alive, could it possibly be that we will be discovered in an attic many years hence. This touches upon an idea I have thought about but never ventured to write about.
