Stone Life

- To think on what comes next to one’s existence, is to never shun or reject the possibilities. One’s existence will forever be a game of chance. (Image by Jerry Uelsmann)

Stone Life

What if…

One’s next evolvement

Were to be a life inside a stone?

To find a consciousness beneath the shell of a rock

While another succession might become an owl

Wanting to unwrap the mystery of wisdom.

Rather intriguing to imagine,

But…

Some might opt for a standard, off the shelf afterlife,

Others to grasp the always flaming tail of reincarnation.

While still others…

“I’m just dead, for Chrissakes.”

But…

This poet’s piece of wandering digresses.

Knowing from where any stone comes,

Is a conundrum understood.

Mountain

Disintegration

Erosion often beneath water

And finally…

Yeah. Just a stone to some.

Yet within, one might experience the cool and quiet,

The peace one may never have experienced in that past existence.

Disturbance is nominal

Rolling along the gentle grounding of a stream,

Where the fishes play water-billiards,

Bank and spin their English to give new reality to their playground

After giving exercise to the otherwise sedentary waiting-game pebble of collectiveness.

Then there’s the choice of finding stone life

In the grass field of talus deposit,

Knowing a cow’s footprint will soon be felt,

Giving grateful submergence into the ever-deeper soil of time’s archives.

Yet…

As living inside the hardness of nugget

One will eventually experience the spark of itself

Against that of another.

And might that not be an awakening to a moon’s shining,

As though beyond the existence from whence one came,

Giving just enough dazzling-light to the stone rubbings,

The scrawling on slabs

The Hieroglyphs of the past

The star charts

One’s inner charts

Now giving radiance to the next flowering of one’s existence?

We all wonder what comes next.

Such a captivating unanswered question.

What is interesting about Stone Life is that there is life in a stone, all those rough edges polished smooth by time and eternity. Your poem is an interesting romp through the improbable, uncovering what is actually probable. Fascinating journey.
