Time's Mirrored Identity

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Urban living, especially in crowded apartment buildings, seems to incubate separation, fear, and distrust. The remedial journey sometimes challenges identity, or the escape from same.. (Image by americanson)

Time’s Mirrored Identity

The reflection, dear friend

Is often fraught with bewilderment

You know?

Like…

The only room we rented together

The “Closet” apartment we called it

Remember…

We’d finally got a window

And beyond on a moonlit night

We pictured the wonder of being part of that vast nothingness.

And being the sole tenants

Thankful for a bedbug bite to scratch

As you went on about the stars

There was a knock at our door

You were afraid to unlatch the deadbolt

Remember…

But when you did

She was standing there

Simple

Plain

Unpretentious

Asking merely to borrow a cup of sugar

You told her you didn’t eat sugar

The two of you just stared at one another

Emotions remained dormant on each side of the threshold

Unable to express the obvious

So…

With a gentle close of the door

My 3rd person escape artist

Went back to his table

Gazed at the paper’s unfinished verse

Picked up the pencil

“Needs sharpening”

With a final glance over the shoulder at the door.

We gazed at Time’s mirrored identity.

This one is so wistfully presented, like a missed opportunity, in the shared fate of two individuals mirrored in lonely pursuit of life compartmentalized.

This is especially true in New York City (Manhattan) where people live amid total strangers, and worse, any of the 10 million inhabitants can come know on your door. I remember always looking over my shoulder when entering my apartment building when I lived in New York back in the 70s as a student. Never again.

Poignant images—"Unable to express the obvious." Well said.
So often true.
Maybe that's not such a bad thing?

scenes like this are what have kept me from urban living
