My Life
How utterly familiar it is
This life
A reality so pervasive
I hardly know it’s around
After all…
Being merely a dot of existence in the universe
Hardly justifies a claim of demonstrable importance
As supernatural believers wring their hands over
Oh…
There’s the occasional shiver
The reminder that mortality
Is catching up with me
But…
I’m reminded of Descartes smelling
The odiferous stench of witches burning
While sitting and thinking
Of a “truth” so obvious
Most of us fail to sense it
I found it hard to grasp as well
Until today
When a neighbor’s parakeet shrieked
“The cat is crouching”
Demanding my attention to his window
Where the birdcage wavered and fell out of frame
Sending a tremble through my arrested body
No, we are but grains of sand in the concrete of a broken bridge of concrete between the earth and the moon. Now and then a bit of rusty iron reinforcing from some great thinker of ideas forward, much too slow for the universe.

PS. That image would make a great cover for my friend from high school's biography, Watching from the Edge of Infinity (unpublished). However, he takes beautiful photographs of the skies from his 16 inch telescope in the Rockies. So he has original photos that he could use for background, as well as being an expert artist, like Leonardo da Vinci in the twentieth century. A
