Imprisoned Tears

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Having been a fan for many years of the teenage jazz pianist, Joey Alexander—touted as a genius of jazz invention in his own rite—my imagining his genesis became gathered thoughts for this poem. (Image from Google). Ps – if you’re a jazz follower and haven’t experienced this young man, take a look. Joey Alexander - Affirmation III - YouTube www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhV-TuOT_xY

Poem Artwork

Imprisoned Tears

Sunlit days might have served the beginning
full moon nights might have fostered continuing
but such were the stillbirths of his effort
emotion's leaves falling
color would follow in the fall

Then was heard his piano
a simple scale
stumbling fingers
a child learning
pausing
allowing laughter of creation’s gift
accepting imperfection as perfect

Listening

Audiences succumbed
lowering their heads in embarrassment

not for their weeping
but for having imprisoned their tears of joy for so long

It is so rare when a work of art or music can bring one to tears. You're right, there is genius when that happens. And often it is very simple words with a very straightforward meaning. There is a fine line between happiness and sadness. Those that find it, regardless of the way they do it, inspire the world.

Your link did not work for me. But I did listen to Wanna, and then, Bali. Wanna was more traditional light improvisional jazz. Elevator music to me. Bali contained an amazing variety of melodies yet kept the same theme. Food for musicians' ears.

The young man's got talent. And only 17 years old too. At your gentle behest, I listened to several pieces on YouTube- Lonely, Faithful, and Bali. Enjoyed them. Thanks for sharing. rlc
