Forgotten Time Remembered

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

During Tuesday’s, March.23rd hearing on gun violence—in the wake of two mass shootings in the span of a week—Senator Mike Lee explained that the party refuses to restrict access to guns because it would infringe on the rights of minority communities. Per BuzzFeed: Oh, please, say I, as history repeats itself. Would that ancient history could repeat itself. (Image relief depicting King Shalmaneser of Assyria, lli 858-824 Bc meeting a Babylonian. Forgotten Time Remembered

Horizons of tenuous time
linger amidst the stench and flames
of battles lost,
still allowing space for those yet to be forged.

How colorless the smoke,
the airless smothering of what once was,
where residue of billowing dust
and wilting spirits now smolder as memory.

Echoing forward from history’s porous walls
the inner self remains infected with crustaceous evil
waiting to catch the waiting flame.. again.

Horizons of time remembered
continues to ask we reckon with nature's insistence,
hearken to light,
sound,
sight,
touch,
taste
and mind.

But…

Such horizons are quickly vanishing from consciousness,
ignorance and greed prevailing,
and just as the fragrance of a roadside flower
has lost its essence once again,
all of nature knows that until honor’s integrity,
has trampled the weeds of hate and greed,
and surges forth to support purveyors of truth,
all of yesterday’s time remembered,
history’s lessons once easily accessible,
may be eternally forgotten.

We must keep history alive. We have so much to learn. Write on, Odin!

Love ya!

Two books, The Selfish Gene and The Territorial Imperative clearly show that we are destined to clash, particularly over territory and regardless of the tools used, knives or guns, we will fail to choose peace over violence and death.

The 21st century is showing a shift from massive worldwide war to incisive technology driven attacks on those considered bad guys by nations and an increasing abhorrence for the killing of civilians as the collateral damage of war or law enforcement.

That trickle-down technology has resulted in war weapons becoming more available to individuals for both protection and revenge. In the future, I can see individuals in surplus tanks attacking and carrying out terrorism of their own personal design.

We have to get a handle on mental illness and stop putting deadly weapons, like cars, in the hands of the mentally unstable. They used to lead us in battle and they still try to lead us in politics, but we should make sure they can't do any harm, anymore.

You make such a strong point here so applicable to our times. We do need to remember and learn from the past and not allow ourselves to be "trampled by the weeds of hate and greed."
