The Glove

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

We’ve all seen a single glove lost in odd places and wondered what the owner was doing to find it. (Painting by Albert Gleizes – French 1881-1953)

Poem Artwork

The Glove

Such humdrum daily treks

From the subway

To my apartment

Same time

Same route

Same everything

Until…

Suddenly

Passing a bus stop just beyond the underpass

Wanting to mean something

More than just covering the hands

A woman’s black leather glove appeared

Someone

Propped it atop a fire hydrant

Thinking perhaps it was dropped

Exiting a bus or cab

Surely, the owner would be looking for it

Passing it by for the next three dreary days

The skies finally opened

Floating meandering snowflakes

To the ground

It appeared

Someone else had turned the glove over

Allowing a few crystals of white

To settle within the fingers now partly closed

Next day…

More snow

Same glove

Now almost a fist

Grasping the collected white

Something held me there

Staring at the fist closing on…

What?

Beauty?

Cold?

Memory?

How?

Such questions of the unexplainable

Seemed normal

Here where flame and ash rising

From trash barrels

Warmed hands of the homeless

Until they seemed to fall asleep

Standing up

As the glove curled further

My feelings deserved pondering the mystery

Here among so many

Unexplained perils of enduring

Where imagination is often the only survivor

Blowing into my naked hands

Something urged me to move on

I liked this poem. The glove symbolizes so much. I've seen objects like this on my way to work and wondered many things. Amazing how our minds latch onto objects that take us off to deeper issues that cause us to search for understanding.

That winterized the memory of humdrum routine marked by observing that glove lost without its pair, waiting to be found in so many walked by, observing like you, wondering where it's owner was. But a glove, placed haphazardly in a pocket for a moment while needing un-gloved hands to do something like handle change, and the glove falls out of the pocket while continuing on, perhaps not to return, even when the glove is discovered lost.

There's a poignant loneliness here. Like when lost people end up collecting snow trying to warm their hands over barrels of trash burning.

Moving on, yes, through all the heartache, and loss, and those past things that still challenge our understanding of them. A poet is blessed, when everywhere he looks, there is something that can open the word-gates of inspiration and originality. A fine word picture Odinsan. Peace... rlc

Nicely done! My favorite lines:

Blowing into my naked hands
Something urged me to move on

It amazes me what inspires us to write...

Intriguing subject with an enigmatic undertone...
taking me within to feelings not quite understood...
