Embracing Scars
Our surface etchings,
How quiet the disfiguring moves
Skin's tenacity ever protective,
Even as tissue of smiles eventually
Becomes but canyon topography,
Bombarded with life’s quaking disrupts
Roaring ever inward.
Aging platelets shift,
Taking their time,
Knowing aging waits,
Busy uplifting sorrows once buried,
Making molten the flow
Once contained and hardened.
Whether by deed,
Word,
Or thought,
Most wounds begin open,
Their scars knowing patience,
Art rendered of dreadful kind.
And then...
A day finally arrives.
The tundra of scars begin to shrivel.
Age becomes its own embrace.
The earned chameleon friendship,
A cycle complete,
The rebirth of crying,
Like the wrinkled baby awaiting protection.
This time,
With the long sleep
Poised beneath cliffs of a lifetime,
Where awakening
Now becomes unnecessary,
Smile muscles mix with sadness,
Becoming new eternal tributaries.
How cyclic is existence,
Returning one of life’s completed expressions
To the eternal drift of it all…
The undaunted oneness.
