The Next Chapter

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Comparing our work plight to that of our recent ancestors, e.g.,'30s and'40s Chicago, New York, et al, I was left thinking: How many of us know of real survival in order to not fear the next chapter? (Image by CNN)

The Next Chapter

Weathering currents
from birth’s ebb
to the growing-old tide.

From embryo on,
purging upon the rocks of reality
becomes an uninvited necessity.

Out of the womb,
we're held high,
slapped,
smiled at
smothered with whispers assuring us,
we’re alive.

Oh, how generously we’re…

Cuddled,
pampered,
protected,
educated,
extricated from the family,
exonerated of past mistakes,
and finally cast to the winds.

Then…

And only then,
the real weathering
of currents begin.

How challenging,
this thrust into foreign waters,
the inevitable coming of age,
at many an age, truth be told,
the "Holy shit" of awakening,
under mind’s water,
gasping for air,
not knowing wisdom waits in silent repose,
Nature’s catharsis of our superficial struggle.

To be denied such resolve,
is to not know of infinite breath,
the conviction that another kind of living
is ready to begin.

Yes…
It’s just a matter of time

‘Til the next chapter.

Yes, I see the next chapter playing out in the second half of this century to be one of the most challenging that humankind has ever faced. Hopefully we can avoid war and mass extinction, including human beings when science and good logic finally overwhelm superstition and fear.

Today's helicopter parents remind me of those that were like that back in the 50s when I was formulating my view of life and taking responsibility for my actions after being hauled into the police station at seven. As a result, I left home at 18 with no fear, no regrets and a wonderful opportunity that college gave me for opening up a whole new world, a new chapter.

Prepared me well for when paralysis opened an entirely new, stressful chapter that I also weathered well because of my earlier preparation. Thankful that my parents were open and allowed me to learn for myself who I would be rather than having it decided for me.

Indeed, if "the present chapter" doesn't suit us, what recourse do we have but wait for the next chapter, hoping that wisdom will not be so silent in its repose.
