Ominous Flirtations

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

One can only imagine the reach of the word “storm” in today’s world of weather storms, health storms, political storms, and the storms not yet given synonymic identity.

Poem Artwork

Ominous Flirtations

They come in all colors,

Shapes,

Sizes,

Importance,

And those that seem to be…

Endless.

Life’s weeds, that are now fretting about,

Prepare as shadows creep across the landscape,

Seeming to be teasing all in their path,

To try and run

In the silence of air-stifled lifeless movement.

Skies continue to reflect blue,

Yet not a bird can be heard,

Nary a butterfly is seen atop a flower,

As leaves of the trees remain in guarded stillness.

Life bends its branches ever so slightly,

In deference to the winds of the unknown

About to remind us of its unpredictability,

Spellbound as we are mesmerized

By the deepening quiet

Of the next ominous flirtation,

Hopefully not of mushroom shape.

Thousands of flights are leaving Afghanistan at this writing. We won't know the wisdom or the folly of the departures until the last plane leaves the ground and the voices of reason are heard. Wars are often won or lost in days. Peace? Sometimes never.

Yes, we seem to be beset by all kinds of unexpected phenomena that we have to face. But once again I would compare the first 21 years of the 20th or the 19th century with ours. And, for the most part, we no longer suffer what they did in those days in many parts of the world where the unexpected ran rampant over so many who died, never to accomplish anything in their lives.

The global village of instant communication makes everything more immediate and seem like it's happening personally when it may be happening thousands of miles away. During the first 21 years after 1800, this country was embroiled in political squabbles much more intense than today social consciousness about slavery coming to the fore while the slave enterprise in the South continued.

Smallpox and yellow fever, along with many other explorer brought pestilence was running rapid in many parts of the world. And wars were being waged with brutal death counts that are no longer happening.

And even if the nuclear genie gets out of the bottle, it will be short-lived because it will not be tolerated. But probably more surgical than Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
