Cataclysmic Baptism
Our once blue sky of hope
The once cover for purity
The once revered protector
Abused and polluted by
Oil barons and all their slow working
Hit squad
Taking their time greed-assassinating
Those of conscience
Cosmic partner
The sun of energy
The sun of warmth
The sun of growth
Now but a hostage
In the power and gluttonous
Eating up those without conscience
Chunks of Antarctic ice have broken apart
Wildfire seasons now months long
Coral reefs bleached of their colors
Mosquitoes spread further their diseases as they expand their territory
Rising temperatures worsen weather events
With Earth already warmed to 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit
On its way toward 2.7 by as early as 2030
Put it altogether
And another cosmic baptism
Such as Ida
Or
The next all-consuming Northern California fire
Will remind citizens once again
How miss-informed and insatiable
Far too many of the wannabe ignoramuses of thought
Continue to denounce science…
At any cost.

Not only will the next cataclysm come shortly, the overall general well-being of everyone will be affected in many ways if we do not get smart and quickly change our ways from conspicuous consumption and convenience to a more sustainable and naturally friendly existence. Once we stop destroying our earth for quick riches, we can begin restoring it to the kind of garden of Eden our mind's eye thinks of as a place we'd like to go right at home.
In the meantime, South Lake Tahoe burns. Who will be next?
